From the title of the book: "Why Beautiful People Have More Daughters ..." Why it should be so, I don't know. Perhaps someone will read the book and tell us.
It was amusing reading that it's beauty that causes people to have girls because Harry had a riff going on TDD about people in southern Greenland having more daughters because of industrialization. (As it turned out, it was just a joke.) That string is so long I don't know if I can find the exact comment, but I'll look for it later and post it here.

I see, however, through a link at Lubos Motl's, that allegedly almost all the babies born in northern Greenland (which must be a small number) are girls; and that this is blamed on industrial pollution.

Speaking just for myself, I would rather have had two daughters than two sons.
Fortunately, I got to have the best of both worlds.
