Media Need to Rethink Their Industry

While watching the election results last night, it occurred to me that the astonishing outcome may have even more impact on the media than on politicians. Information purveyors have some serious thinking to do if they want their industries to survive. What they need to do is start telling the truth -- it's obvious the voting public isn't buy the lies and spin they're selling.

This article from Big Journalism makes an interesting point. Those getting their news from the New York Times had no idea what was going on in Massachusetts. In fact, I read that someone (didn't keep the link) read the Times carefully for some past weeks and reported that if that was the only source of your information, you would have had no idea that a sea change was happening in Massachusetts.

The NYT's follow-up editorial is a queasy combination of sycophancy and denial.

Apparently the Chicago Tribune didn't even mention the election until p.14.
