The Left Wing School Agenda and the Banning of Patriotism, by Mark Loftin
When Churchill was dropped from the UK school curriculum last July, one had to wonder if patriotism itself was next. Now it's official.
The Institute of Education, a leading educational body, has warned teachers not to instill pride in students when speaking of great moments in British History: "To love what is corrupt is itself corrupting, not least because it inclines us to ignore, forget, forgive or excuse the corruption. And there's the rub for patriotism."
[...]Here in the US, the leftist agenda is also sinking its teeth into our schools at an equally disturbing pace. Leading the charge is California: San Francisco is debating an anti-war textbook, which features corporate American celebrating the spoils of war and Ronald Regan hugging Osama Bin Laden. Pete Hammer of the San Francisco Unified School District, who approved the book, says "The topic is one that a lot of teachers would have an interest in bringing into the classroom."

The new season of the TV show, “Jericho,” is a leftwing nutcase’s dream -- right wing conspirators (where do they find all the Nixon look-alikes) have taken over the government and want to rewrite the Constitution and the history books (in real life, it's leftwing nuts who are actually doing that) to debunk the left's most sacred myths. I have to say, I didn’t see that coming and "Jericho" has been deleted from the DVR line up.
The TV show, “24,” is under new management and won’t be shown until this time next year. By then, the reality of a leftwing sweep of our real government, not only our entertainment industry, might be a reality. Anyone who doesn’t get to the polls to vote for Republicans across the board is foolishly jeopardizing our very way of life.

I was worried for a minute there by that quote, e. Then I looked up the whole article in the Institute of Education magazine and see that it has been taken completely out of context. You can read the full, balanced, article here.

Well, I think there is a thin and wobbly line between patriotism and jingoism. Who would ensure that individual teachers were not teaching their own extremist views? There is a huge difference between teaching students how to make informed judgements about history and politics and telling them what they ought to think. I'm all for keeping these things out of the classroom.
m. from your lips to God's ears. Unfortunately, it's a bit late. The public schools have been propagandizing for decades to such an extent that most people under about 50 have no idea of history, their own or anyone else's.
Brits have a very lot to be proud of. Your little island is the home of much that is good about the world and your citizens should be made aware of it and if that's jingoism, so be it.
There is an awful tendency in Britain to rush to legislation without thinking of possible consequences. I think this study urges caution - when there is no obvious need for a new law, I say don't make one.
