Mr Brown joined other European leaders at a Lisbon summit to crack open the champagne to toast a new EU blueprint that, he hopes, the Government can force through parliament without giving in to the clamour for a popular vote.
Can Mr. Brown be so stupid as to sell his heritage of freedom and democracy for some Belgian beans?

Following the EU debates in the British media and British blogs over the years, I've come to the conclusion that the dream of the British chattering classes is to treat as equals with their historical enemies rather than play second fiddle to their historical friends. Sort of the obverse of the Democrats, who dream of glorious reconciliations with sworn enemies at the cost of selling out unexciting, irksome friends.
But I think "red" Britain may see it another way and this will be interesting.
These color designations are confusing. I still think of "red" as communist, but a few presidential elections back, the media, not missing a chance for obfuscation, turned that notion on its head by reversing the color designations from the logical red for Democrats and blue for Republican. So by red, do you mean commies or conservatives?
The worm may be turning our way. The strike in France instead of causing the usual chaos, had an abrupt end and a conservative won the governorship in Louisiana, long a democratic stronghold.
And it will be interesting if brits allow themselves to be steam rollered by parliament.
And even if would be a disaster for us, won't it be poetic justice if Blair becomes EU president and Clinton becomes the first first lady in drag.
Yes, this red/blue thing is difficult and confusing to non-Americans. Up here, since time immemorial, the Liberals have been associated with red and the Conservatives with blue. In fact, in Quebec the popular names for the two parties are "Les Rouges" and "Les Bleues". Having spent the last few years blogging with conservative Americans, I now must focus before Canadian dinner parties.
It's the price you pay for being a man of the world.
