The Idle Rich

Lately, the media, willing collaborators of our lefty masters, are waging a campaign to put a lot of the blame for failed lefty policies on us geezers.

Here's my reply:

Re: Social Security -- we didn't want it, we'd have much preferred to keep our money and invest it ourselves just as we didn't want Medicare, Medicare Part D and all the other "freebies" we geezers are getting. I got news for you youngsters, it cost us over $12,000 last year for all that free health care stuff and we had absolutely no issues, operations, procedures or expensive treatments of any kind. Just insurance premiums, deductibles and out-of-pocket drug costs.

Here's a bit history:

Our money was confiscated by an earlier incarnation socialist government to set up a social security net for working people who couldn't/wouldn't take care of their own non working years. The geniuses who set it up didn’t factor in the increase in life expectancy and enhanced life style expectations of modern geezers who didn’t conveniently die a year or two after a retirement spent in a rocking chair.

Over the years, the program was vastly expanded to include people who never worked and other "needy" people like drunks and drug addicts all the while building up a huge trillion dollar bureaucracy and adding millions of public sector union members who would be faithful lefty supporters.

So now that the system is overloaded and probably beyond repair, there's a campaign afoot to demonize those who of us were sold the bill of goods in the first place and we’re being blamed for saddling future generations with massive debt. It won’t work. We geezers aren’t the product of the modern union controlled progressive public schools. Even though our brain power may not be 100% of what it once was, we can still figure things out for ourselves. It’s bum rap and we aren’t going to accept it.

Neither are we accepting the rap that we “got ours” and now don’t want to help the less fortunate. Handing out benefits and entitlements isn’t helping the poor just as giving kids anything they lay their eyes on, is teaching them to be parasites, not contributing citizens.

We geezers pay our share of the taxes that support the welfare state and like the rest of Americans, give a huge percentage of our incomes to charity and we volunteer our time and energy to those less fortunate, so lay off the blame game.

It's the failed policies of almost a hundred years of social engineering that's caused the financial crisis (and not only in the U.S.), not us. You’re promoting class envy -- this time between our children and their elders and it ain't pretty.

Do you have a link to some examples of blaming geezers?

I was under the impression that they were going for cradle to grave welfare and nanny state, so I must've missed the blame the geezers stuff.

My inspiration was this post by Orrin about the geezers at Tea Parties motivated by greed and how our "benefits" are welfare and/or entitlements.

I'll look for some similar links and post them.

I don't think Orrin's "Stop the Welfare Checks...just not mine" snark is a particularly good characterization of that article and I don't think the article's author believes that "lefty policies" such as SS have failed, nor does he blame "geezers" for the non-failure (at least by my interpretation).

The article doesn't even claim that the tea-partiers don't want cuts in SS for their own benefit. Perhaps the tea-partiers are sophisticated enough to understand that substantial cuts to existing SS benefits would cause too much hardship.

My solution to the SS problem is: every 3 years raise the benefits age by 1 year. That would fix everything.

Bret, I didn't even read the article. I was responding to Orrin, but I have heard those arguments before.

My solution is to reduce social services every year by 10 percent and move all charity including medical care to local communities.

Allow insurance companies and every other kind of business to ply their trade as they will with laws against fraud and theft enforced.
