Help!

Don't get this xkcd carton entitled, Dorm Poster

I think I get that the person on the right is a new roommate who has a similar poster to the one already there, except it has a lens through which the light passes and inverts the image, but don't get why there are two chairs at the desk on the left and no chairs at the desk on the right and definitely don't get why this is funny.

Help.

Not sure either.

The poster is from the Pink Floyd album Dark Side of the Moon.

Maybe it's because it turns the poster into an Escher like drawing?

A mystery to me as well. I do note that the other side of the room is opposite in other ways (unmade bed, one neat backpack vs. clutter, laptop vs. desktop) but not sure what the point is.

SH, I thought of that too, but as you say, it really doesn't fit and what's with the two chairs on the left?

Maybe it's political. People on the left are entitled to people on the right's stuff?

I love these cartoons and sometimes it takes a bit of thought before I get it, but this is the first one that's completely stumped me.

The lens refocuses the light beam dispersed by the prism; the second, upside down, prism collates the colors and emits a beam of light that is (theoretically) completely identical to the one entering from the left

Based upon the imagery and other clues, the new roommate will invariably undo, or have habits directly contrary to, the existing occupant.

I think the joke is that randomly assigned roommates are never compatible.

BTW, Dark Side of the Moon is some of the greatest music ever.

Now I'm even more confused. My husband, the CPA and the farthest one can get from being a nerd, looked at the cartoon and noticed there is only one chair on the left side of the room???

It still looks like two chairs to me and I still don't get it.
