Kelly King has a future in the media should she want one.An amazing clip via Verum Serum. God only knows how much heat she and Sgt. Lashley will take from the “authenticity” police for this; Crowley’s a spectacularly lucky guy to have friends like them. In fact, I’m thinking that beer date at the White House to discuss “tolerance” might not be such a bad idea if Crowley gets to bring Kelly King along. Skip Gates and The One might just learn something.

I like Hitchens' take on this.
As it turns out that the woman who called 911 was Hispanic, not white, and, as the tape of the call shows, she didn't mention the race or ethnicity of the two men. In fact, when questioned by the police dispatcher, she said it was dark and she couldn't see them that well. Apparently there was no racial profiling.
Constitutional rights against search and seizure, probable cause, etc., didn't apply in this case because an officer was answering a call for assistance. Asking for an ID is apparently official police procedure and had Gates shown one, the incident was have ended there.
Why Gates didn't do so is the question that as far as I know hasn't been answered.
