Victim of the Common Market

Frozen meat and dairy exports from New Zealand to Britain from then on formed the backbone of New Zealand's economy until Britain entered the EEC (European Economic Community) in 1974. New Zealand's produce was then excluded.

Why wasn't New Zealand as part of the Commonwealth part of the EEC as well?

NZ was not part of Europe. If NZ had been included piggy back on UK, Australia and all other claimants to Commonwealth status would have to be included as well.
The more interesting question is why Britain joined the EC.

That question is answered by the political party in favor at the time and yes all members of the Commonwealth should have been given the opportunity to participate should they decide to do so.
